musings on cars part II

thanks, friends, for your kind words and suggestions. i'll be taking a look at all the models you put forward, with the exception of the pickup, because that just ain't practical 'round these parts! also, does anyone have any comments on subarus? i know they're the middle-aged mom car, but they seem so determined and they have lots of room for, oh, things like bat detectors and purple tables. (you would be amazed at the type of cargo the civic has carried in its day.)

and an update: the piece of plastic shielding went sailing off into the blue yonder yesterday as i drove on the highway. i'm glad it didn't hit anyone. it was rather large for something i never even knew existed!

First off, sorry to hear about your experience in the rain. Lightning can really freak a person out - it's an instinctual thing, I believe.

Second, Subarus are very nice vehicles. A friend of mine who's owned a Honda Prelude and a Lexus IS300 is currently driving a Subaru Legacy (sedan) and he loves it. Subaru's are built for bad weather. The Outback has always been my favorite.

Other than that, I'd look into a new Honda Accord (We just got one. It has front and side curtain airbags standard. And the a/c isn't good - it's grrrrrrrrreat!!!) or a Toyota Camery. I didn't like the way the Camery handled and practically nothing's standard, but it does have impressive breaking numbers and a built-in milk jug holder in the trunk. Plus it's friggin' huge!

VWs are really nice, and we seriously considered them in our search, but take note of the poor repair record. If you get one, make sure to include an extended warranty.

Oh, and wherever you look, do a lot of research and then go to carsdirect.com to look up pricing. Their prices are generally very good, and while you may not wish to purchase through them (your choice - we almost did) they're probably the best starting point once you've narrowed the playing field to a couple of vehicles.

If you need any other information, let me know. I've learned a lot about car buying this past month (mostly about new cars), and I'd hate for that knowledge to go to waste.

Good luck in your car search!

fantastic--thanks so much. i plan on visiting the subaru, honda and toyota dealerships around here. my honda has been such a trouper, i'm really loathe to give her up, but i need something a little more weather-savvy. the fuel efficiency thing is high priority too. i'm definitely a hatchback/wagon kind of girl, rather than sedan, so i'm going to check out the little mini-SUV models these manufacturers are putting out (washes mouth out with soap. SUV=bad) to see whether they're small enough and efficient enough for me to deal with.

when i've looked around, i'll let you know my impressions and you can give me some feedback! you're awesome!
